..THE SPARK OF LIFE...
On the 11th of May, 1999, Lumiere Celeste Callaghan was born in Pennsylvania to Lucianna Callaghan, and Calum Hayden. It wasn’t a perfect marriage. In fact, they weren’t even married at all. When Lucianna found out she was pregnant, Calum was already halfway out the door. And for a while, it was just Lumiere and her mother, building something small but steady on their own.Lucianna worked at an inn as both an assistant manager, and baker. They were happy, and content… just the two of them. Her grandmother, Celestine Callaghan, would often visit them. The reminders, assurances, and comfort to Lucianna linger with the words “You’re better off without him.” always being muttered. But Lucianna still silently hoped he’d come back.
..THE FLICKERING PRESENCE...
And he did, when Lumiere was five.Charming, apologetic, saying all the right things. Lucianna, soft-hearted and hopeful, let him in again. At the age of five, she had always wondered why her friends had a person they called “dad”, and she didn’t have any. So when he was introduced into her life, she accepted him with the widest smile, paired with arms opened wide. For a while, they were a happy family, one that Lumi’s always seen in movies, in the parks, and in the bedtime stories her mom reads to her.About eight months later, Calum left again. And came back again when she was nine.Still, Lucianna accepted him (She was deeply in love, don’t blame her. She was already getting an earful from her mother, don’t worry.) Same as with Lumiere. For all she knows, dad was only on a long trip. After a while… Calum left, yet again.Lumiere was thirteen when he came back.By then, Lumiere started noticing the inconsistency. The way his presence always felt temporary, like he was visiting a life he wasn’t fully committed to. Though confused, still, she tried. For her mother. Especially how she sees Lucianna so wrecked without her father’s presence, compared to her demeanor when he’s back home.Despite everything… like clockwork, Calum left again.
..THE BREAKING POINT...
The last time he came back, Lumiere was eighteen. He stayed longer that time. Long enough for both Lumiere and Lucianna to have that tiny fire of hope in their hearts grow. But also long enough for Lumiere to find out the truth. It didn’t come out all at once. It came in pieces… missed calls, late nights, stories that didn’t line up. Names Lumiere didn’t recognize. A date, a time, a lie that was just slightly off. October 13th. 10:15 PM. He said he was asleep. He said he was home.He wasn’t.There wasn’t just one woman.. It was a pattern. While Lucianna stayed loyal, Calum moved like nothing tied him down.Lumiere was the one who pieced it together. And once she saw it, she couldn’t unsee it.Her trust collapsed quietly, simultaneous to the walls building up around her heart. He didn’t just leave. He lied. Over and over again, to both of them. That was the breaking point.
..THE END OF THE CYCLE...
Lucianna didn’t yell. Didn’t make a scene. After some time… Lucianna forgave Calum. Fully, without bitterness. They eventually stayed as friends. But Lucianna was now guarded, not as fickle as before (Celestine will probably smack her head if she’ll be). But kind enough to remain a connection and friendship to him, for the sake of their daughter and what they’ve been through.
..THE LIFE SHE CHOSE...
For Lumiere, the lesson was harder. She watched her mother choose grace, and she understood that forgiveness didn’t mean forgetting. Calum still tried to be close to her… to show up, to ask about her life, to act like he could make up for lost time.By the time she stepped into adulthood, Lumiere carried a quiet strength with her, built with the kind of resilience shaped by absence, betrayal, and the steady, consistent love of her mother, and grandmother. Despite everything, she still found space for love in her heart. Even with walls built up, they weren’t there to keep it out, just to make sure it was real before she let it in.Somewhere along the way, she found comfort in both music and baking. Her grandmother, Celestine, liked singing a lot, and Lucianna was still a baker. Skills they’ve taught and passed onto Lumiere as she grew up.So she built a life out of those skills. By day, she’s a baker, hands dusted in flour, turning simple ingredients into something warm and comforting. And by night, she’s a voice on the radio, filling quiet spaces with music, gentle conversation, and comfort… the kind she once needed, herself.
